How Skill Building Supports Help You Live More Autonomously

Many people think the NDIS is only about having someone do things for you. They might think it is just for help with showering or cleaning the house. However, there is a whole part of the NDIS focused on teaching you how to do things for yourself.

The most common question we hear from young adults and families is: "How can I move out on my own if I don't know how to cook or manage money yet?"

The answer lies in skill building support. Instead of just giving you a hand, these supports give you the tools to take control. In this guide, we will look at how capacity building works, what skills you can learn, and how these small steps lead to big changes in your independence.

    What are Capacity Building Supports?

In your NDIS plan, you might see a section called "Capacity Building." This is a fancy way of saying "learning new skills." While your Core Supports help with your needs today, Capacity Building is an investment in your future.

The goal is to help you become more self-reliant. It shifts the focus from "who is doing this for me?" to "how can I learn to do this myself?" At GV Complete Care, we work with you to break down big goals—like moving out or getting a job—into small, easy steps that you can practice every week.

    Daily Skills for Independent Living

Living on your own requires a lot of "behind the scenes" work. Many participants use their funding to practice the essential tasks of running a home. These are often called daily living skills.

    Cooking and Meal Planning

Learning to cook is about more than just a recipe. It is about safety and health. We help you learn how to:

    • Use kitchen appliances safely.

    • Create a simple weekly menu.

    • Write a shopping list based on a budget.

    • Store food correctly so it stays fresh.

    Budgeting and Money Management

Managing money is a huge part of being independent. We can support you as you learn to:

    • Understand the cost of things like rent and electricity.

    • Use banking apps to check your balance.

    • Save up for something special.

    • Avoid "scams" or people who might try to take advantage of you.

    Home and Personal Care

This includes the routines that keep your life running smoothly. You can practice:

    • Setting a morning routine to be on time for appointments.

    • Learning how to use a washing machine and dryer.

    • Keeping your personal space clean and organized.

    Navigating Your Community

Independence also means being able to get where you need to go without relying on family or taxis. This is a big part of our skill building support programs.

Travel Training: We can help you learn to use public transport across Victoria. This involves learning how to read a bus timetable, using a travel card, and knowing what to do if you get lost or a bus is late.

Using Technology: In today's world, knowing how to use a phone or computer is vital. We help you learn to use apps for transport, health, and staying in touch with friends safely.

Why These Skills Matter for Your Future

Every skill you learn builds your confidence. When you know how to cook a meal or catch a bus, you stop feeling like you are stuck. This confidence often leads to bigger opportunities, such as:

    • Moving into your own home: You might move into Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) or a private rental.

    • Finding a Job: Many of the skills you learn at home—like being on time and following a list—are exactly what employers look for.

    • Making New Friends: When you can travel and manage your own time, it is much easier to join social groups and stay connected.

    How We Help You Grow

Our team believes in "guided participation." This means we don't just stand back and watch, and we don't just do the work for you. We work alongside you. We might show you how to do something once, then let you try while we help, and eventually, we step back as you master the skill.

We use a "Social Work" approach. This means we listen to your voice. We want to know what independence looks like to you. For one person, it might be making a piece of toast. For another, it might be moving to a new city for TAFE. No goal is too small.

    Ready to Build Your Skills?

    FAQs

Can I use NDIS money to go out for fun?

Yes. You can use your funding to do things you enjoy. This includes going to the movies, visiting friends, or joining a sports club. The NDIS wants you to be part of your community.

Does the NDIS pay for my movie ticket or lunch?

No. The NDIS pays for your support worker to go with you. You must pay for your own "extras." This means you pay for your own tickets, meals, and club fees.

What is the difference between 1:1 and group support?

1:1 support means one worker helps only you. This is good for special goals. Group support means you go out with a few other people. This is a great way to make new friends.

How do you choose a worker for me?

We listen to what you like. If you love footy, we try to find a worker who loves footy too. We want you to have a worker you can talk to and enjoy spending time with.

What can I do in Shepparton with my support?

You can do many things. You can go for a swim at Aquamoves. You can visit the Shepparton Art Museum. You can also go to local markets or join a community group.

How do I get started with social support?

You can call us or fill out our online form. We will talk about what you like to do. Then, we will find the right worker to help you get out and about.
